The media industry has exerted enormous influence on society for many year. Even before the invention of radios, movies, and television printed information from newspaper, magazines, and books were a powerful force in shaping how people think and behave. Broadcast media are more powerful than printed publications because the can reach more people and reach them faster. The internet has added a new dimension to media industry.

Webzines
Webzines are also called e-magazines,e-zines, or just zines. A webzine is a magazine that is published on the web for a whole range of readers. Some webzines are online versions of traditional print magazines, but others are available only online. Some have a large, general readership, but others are read almost exclusively but people who share a profession, a hobby, or some other interest.

Blogs
Blogs, short for webblogs, have quickly swept through the Internet as an easy to publish your journal. Be aware, anyone can read entries and, at times, come on the entries. The author of a blog is called blogger.

Afracan Proverb #7

"An intelligent enemy is better than a stupid friend."

I personally do not agree with the African Proverb. Why should I have to fix myself to a standard just to outsmart you and for what reason are you even against me. I'd rather have a stupid friend because he or she isn't against me. An intelligent enemy is only plotting on you. A stupid friend will be or do something stupid which might affect you, but not to the degree of an intelligent person out to get you. So I'd rather have a stupid friend over an intelligent enemy

He conjectured: what if a calculating engine could not only foresee but could act on that foresight. Ada was touched by the "universality of his ideas". Hardly anyone else was.

8.What kind of wafers are used at Intel to make computer chips?

Computer chip technology is in all sorts of everyday items, from space shuttles to coffee makers, traffic lights, and computers. A basic rule of thumb is, if a device uses electricity and you can "tell it what to do" by programming it or customizing it, there's a chip inside.

Chips perform various tasks by design, meaning that some are more complex than others. The most sophisticated chip is a microprocessor, whose transistors can execute hundreds of millions of instructions per second.

9. What do they call the suit that cleanroom technicians must wear while making computer chips?

10. What does modem stand for anyway?

mō´dem) (n.) Short for modulator-demodulator. A modem is a device or program that enables a computer to transmit data over, for example, telephone or cable lines. Computer information is stored digitally, whereas information transmitted over telephone lines is transmitted in the form of analog waves. A modem converts between these two forms.
Fortunately, there is one standard interface for connecting external modems to computers called RS-232. Consequently, any external modem can be attached to any computer that has an RS-232 port, which almost all personal computers have. There are also modems that come as an expansion board that you can insert into a vacant expansion slot. These are sometimes called onboard or internal modems.

While the modem interfaces are standardized, a number of different protocols for formatting data to be transmitted over telephone lines exist. Some, like CCITT V.34, are official standards, while others have been developed by private companies. Most modems have built-in support for the more common protocols -- at slow data transmission speeds at least, most modems can communicate with each other. At high transmission speeds, however, the protocols are less standardized.

Aside from the transmission protocols that they support, the following characteristics distinguish one modem from another:

bps : How fast the modem can transmit and receive data. At slow rates, modems are measured in terms of baud rates. The slowest rate is 300 baud (about 25 cps). At higher speeds, modems are measured in terms of bits per second (bps). The fastest modems run at 57,600 bps, although they can achieve even higher data transfer rates by compressing the data. Obviously, the faster the transmission rate, the faster you can send and receive data. Note, however, that you cannot receive data any faster than it is being sent. If, for example, the device sending data to your computer is sending it at 2,400 bps, you must receive it at 2,400 bps. It does not always pay, therefore, to have a very fast modem. In addition, some telephone lines are unable to transmit data reliably at very high rates.
voice/data: Many modems support a switch to change between voice and data modes. In data mode, the modem acts like a regular modem. In voice mode, the modem acts like a regular telephone. Modems that support a voice/data switch have a built-in loudspeaker and microphone for voice communication.
auto-answer : An auto-answer modem enables your computer to receive calls in your absence. This is only necessary if you are offering some type of computer service that people can call in to use.
data compression : Some modems perform data compression, which enables them to send data at faster rates. However, the modem at the receiving end must be able to decompress the data using the same compression technique.
flash memory : Some modems come with flash memory rather than conventional ROM, which means that the communications protocols can be easily updated if necessary.
Fax capability: Most modern modems are fax modems, which means that they can send and receive faxes.
To get the most out of a modem, you should have a communications software package, a program that simplifies the task of transferring data.

11. I think the person who coined these computer terms must have been hungry.

What is a bit?
How many bits are in a byte?
How many nibbles are in a byte?

A bit (short for binary digit) is the smallest unit of data in a computer. A bit has a single binary value, either 0 or 1. Although computers usually provide instructions that can test and manipulate bits, they generally are designed to store data and execute instructions in bit multiples called bytes. In most computer systems, there are eight bits in a byte. The value of a bit is usually stored as either above or below a designated level of electrical charge in a single capacitor within a memory device.
Half a byte (four bits) is called a nibble. In some systems, the term octet is used for an eight-bit unit instead of byte. In many systems, four eight-bit bytes or octets form a 32-bit word. In such systems, instruction lengths are sometimes expressed as full-word (32 bits in length) or half-word (16 bits in length).

16. How many megabytes of data can a factory made audio CD hold?

When you copy data to a CD, you must take care that the your data does not exceed the capacity of the CD you are recording to. Due to the audio origin of CDs, the amount of information a CD can hold is measured in minutes:seconds:sectors. Each second contains 75 sectors, each of which can hold 2048 bytes (2 kilobytes) of Mode 1 user data. Recordable CDs come in 21- (80 mm diameter), 63-, and 74-minute sizes (both 120 mm diameter), which can contain:
21 min x (60 sec) x (75 sectors) x (2 kbytes) = 189,000 kilobytes
= 184 megabytes

63 min x (60 sec) x (75 sectors) x (2 kbytes) = 567,000 kilobytes
= 553 megabytes

74 min x (60 sec) x (75 sectors) x (2 kbytes) = 660,000 kilobytes
= 650 megabytes

Factory-recorded CDs can hold up to 74 minutes of data.

22. What is a computer virus?

A computer virus is a program designed to spread itself by first infecting
executable files or the system areas of hard and floppy disks and then
making copies of itself. Viruses usually operate without the knowledge or
desire of the computer user.

23. How did Marcian Hoff's invention change computers?

Chernoff submitted his idea and made it through several rounds of competition, continually improving his design with each round. In the end, Staples chose his Rubber Bandits from among more than 8,000 entries; they awarded Chernoff $5,000 and signed him to an exclusive two-year agreement. In 2005, the company began selling the colorful bands in retail stores across the country. The bands were sold through late 2007.

24. Apple Computer's G4 is a supercomputer because its operations can be measured in gigaflops. What is a

Internet-Related Multimedia Careers

Multimedia development is most often done by teams of people. Each team member brings an area of expertise to the project.

Research 3 multimedia careers. State their job descriptions, skill requirements and salaries.

Video Game Designer
* Job Description:

Video Game Designers don’t create games. They create detailed design documents. A design document contain descriptions of all aspects of an electronic game - mission, plot, rules, flow charts, sound, artwork, and special features. The design document is the blueprint used by graphic artists, sound designers, and programmers to create the software that results in the video game.

* Skill Requirements:

You have to know how video game design and development works, and experience as a programmer, artist, or producer helps. Most video game designers have bachelor’s degrees in English, art, computer science, or related areas.

* Salaries:

Video game designers work in small start-up companies as well as large multimedia corporations. Their annual salaries vary widely but are usually in the $25,000 - $75,000 range.

Computer Control Programmers

* Job Description:

Computer control programmers carefully plan and prepare the process of using computer numerically controlled machines to cut metal, plastic, or glass precisely, shaping a finished part or product. First, they review three-dimensional blueprints of a part. Next, they calculate the operations that must be performed on the workpiece. And finally, they plan the sequence of the tasks that need to be performed to produce the finished part or product.Computer control programmers must then turn the detailed plan of machining operations into a set of numerical commands for the computer numerically controlled machine to follow. After the program is written, the programmers check the programs to make sure that the machinery functions properly and that the finished parts and products meet specifications. Computer control operators then download the set of commands to the computer numerically controlled machine, position the workpiece on the machine tool, set the controls, and let the machine do the necessary cuts and other operations.

* Skill Requirements:

The National Institute of Metalworking Skills developed a set of skills standards for computer control programmers that have been adopted by a number of vocational training facilities and colleges. Classroom training includes computer programming basics. Graduates of these programs are certified by the National Institute of Metalworking Skills.

* Salaries:
Computer Control Programmers earn about $175200 a year.

Illustrators and Graphic Designers

* Job Description:

Illustrators and graphic designers are both in the business of creating original art to decorate or to convey information. Illustrators draw pictures for books, magazines, and other print materials, including greeting cards and wrapping paper. Graphic designers use art to communicate a message to a certain audience.Illustrators use light, shadows, and color to create two-dimensional pictures. Most illustrators specialize in a particular type of drawing. For instance, fashion illustrators work for fashion designers and draw sketches of clothing as it is being

* Skill Requirements:

All artists must have artistic talent, creativity, imagination, skill, and knowledge specific to the industry in which they work. Most people who enter the fields of illustration or graphic design hone their skills in a two-year or three-year post-secondary program—or preferably in a four-year bachelor's degree program. Computer graphics courses are now essential for job consideration in these highly competitive fields.

* Salaries:

ccording to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, illustrators earn a median annual salary of $38,060. Salaried medical illustrators earn significantly more. The median income for a full-time medical illustrator in 2005 was $59,000.

African Proverb #6

"Knowledge is like a garden,if it is not cultivated, it not be harvested."
This African Proverb simply means that I must control my amount of knowledge, if otherwise it won't be there for later use. To cultivate my garden of knowledge I must practice and ask questions to assure that I understand certain things. When I'm sure my garden's needs (questions or hard problems) are met, I can the harvest it. I consider harvest in this case to mean collect and use; after I've finish learning for the day I have collected the knowledge and I'll use and practice, so that I don't forget it. An example some who hasn't done practiced this proverb, are the people that go on "Are you smarter that a fifth grader", no ever wins because they haven't tended to their garden.

By not tending to your garden your plants (or lessons:teachings) die (fade and be removed). Teachers give the teachings which of course they practiced because the student these lessons (plants) from your mind (garden). As long as you practice you'll never forget or lose any valuable abilities.

African Proverb #4

"It is better to be loved than feared."

I believe that the African Proverb "It is better to be loved then feared" is self-explanatory. This African Proverb means that being afraid of you doesn't mean I respect you. One example of the African Proverb being displayed would be when kingdoms take over land the formers owners of the land don't respect, love or care about this kingdom, yet they do nothing upset the kingdom because they are scared of what the kingdom would do. One way this Proverb can be used in life is, if your in authority over others, you should try and gain respect.

Extra Cash

You have an extra $100,000 to give away; you cannot spend it on yourself. What would you do with the money?

If I had $100,000 of extra cash,and couldn't spend it on myself, I'd give the money away to many. Firstly I'd offer to family members and I'd divide $2,120 those of them in need. Next if there were any local new buisnesses being built I'd invest in them, giving $10,000, but in return I'd only want the good news of the grand opening. I'd next give $20,000 to the campaign supporters of Obama. I'd spend $18,000 on advertisement of a fundraiser to open an apartment for the homeless; then I'd of course then buy the land which I'd estimate to be about $4,980.

African Proverb #2

To me the African Proverb Wood may remain ten years in water, but it will never become a crocodile means that no matter how long something remains it won't change. Everything is meant to be itself and nothing more. This African Proverb is commonly realized throughout life. An example would be that a dog will never become a cat because it was born to be a dog. Another example is a computer can stay at a technology store but never upgrade to a laptop.

African Proverb #1

To me the African Proverb "Knowledge is better than Riches" Explains itself. In other words the African Proveb "Knowledge is better than Riches" is that incredible itelligence is can do more than any amount of money. We commonly us the African Proverb "Knowledge is better than Riches" in daily life. I demonstrate usage of this African Proverb by using my knowledge of how to cook rather than buying a burger from Mc Donalds with my riches. Another example of usage of this is to use yuor knowledge to get out of a situation instead of bribing your riches.

08-09 School Year

It seems as though I made no goals last year,being 07-08; Although this year I'd like to make Honor Roll, last years I recieved A's B's and one "C" . I think is't the A's B's and negleting the C that I got a bike, but was stolen; I know if I get all A's I can only imagine what I'll get. Even though I had no goals last year I have self expectations which are to recieve anything above a " C ", I'm sure that I didn't meet my own expectations because I didn't try but this time i will. Last year and this year my favorite subject are math and science, and that's because the explain everything in life.
